A freelancer usually costs less for the same scope, because there is no office, no account-management layer and no sales team to pay for. Speed and communication
With a freelancer you talk to the person doing the work, so decisions are quicker and nothing is lost between an account manager and the specialist. Agencies add process, which helps large accounts but can slow small ones.
Skills and range
An agency can field a designer, a video editor, a developer and an ad specialist at the same time. A good freelancer is strong in a few areas and says so when a job is outside their range. Some freelancers, myself included, cover marketing, websites and video together, but one person can only run so many campaigns at once.
Risks and how to reduce them
The main risk with a freelancer is depending on one person: illness, travel or a busy period can stall your work. Reduce it by owning your ad accounts, Google Business Profile and analytics yourself, keeping your own login access, and asking for a simple record of what has been set up. The main risk with an agency is that the person who sold you the work is not the person doing it.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Who will actually do the work every day?
- Will my ad accounts, Google Business Profile and analytics be in my name?
- Can you show live examples and real results, and can I speak to a past client?
- How will you report results, and how often?
- What is included in your fee, and what is paid separately as ad spend?
- What happens if we want to stop? Is there a notice period or lock-in?
My recommendation by business size
- Small local business with one or two channels: start with a freelancer.
- Growing business that needs design, video, development and ads together on a tight schedule: consider an agency, or a freelancer who manages specialists for you.
- Not sure: start with a short, clearly scoped project and judge the results before committing for longer.
